PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BELOW CAREFULLY AS IT WILL ASSIT YOU IN RUNNING THE APPLICATION PROPERLY
The current version of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) Data Capture (DC) application is supplied by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks. All necessary files to run the application are contained within the file temdc01.exe.
The version is identified in the name by a 2 digit number (e.g. temdc01.exe). The highest number (i.e. 01, 02, 03) is the most recent version. Always download the most recent version.
TO INSTALL THE TEM DC:

Once it is installed, open the temdc01.xls by:
Once the temdc01.xls is open:
Once data is loaded (or during loading process);
Site_S (Site Series) and Site_MC (Site Map Code) at least one of these columns must be filled in, both columns may be filled in, but at least one, OR
Struct_S (Structural Stage) must be filled in if the Site_S or the Site_MC requires it.
WHAT MUST BE FILLED IN: (all mandatory attributes)
If you are unsure as to what information or what format is required for project or polygon information, please see Table 2-2 of the TEM Data Capture Standards, Version 2.0.
This application was built to the 1998 Standard for Digital Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) Data Capture in British Columbia, so there are some mandatory attributes that were not collected prior to the release of the 1998 standards. The attributes are:
If the data being entered does not include these attributes, the user can fill in the missing information with the following:
USER DEFINED INFORMATION
The user defined table is for inputting information that is correct but has yet to be approved. Common user defined codes are Site_MC (Site Map Codes).
It is important to fill out columns possible for each user defined code. Here is an example of the columns the user must fill out a user defined Site Map Code:
TO VALIDATE A DATASET:
Once all mandatory columns have been populated, and all other data entered that is available, be sure to save a copy of the worksheet in the same directory where the DC is installed (generally c:/tem/project1).
On the menu bar, choose 'tem', 'verify'.
Once the pop up screen appears, choose 'verify'
Option # 1 for viewing error report:
When the pop up screen appears and the user is given the choice to verify, there is a box that is checked that says "use excel". If the box remains checked, once the error report is complete, a list of errors will pop up in an excel window and show all errors found. The user can then click once on an error and the system will take you directly to that error. However, the user cannot copy this list!
Option # 2 for viewing error report:
When the pop us screen appears and the user is given the choice to verify, there is a box that is checked that says "use excel". If the user removes the check, once the error report is complete, a list of errors will pop up in a notepad window and show all errors found. This list will provide the location of the error, but will not take the user directly there.
However, the user can copy and save this list!
If the data is clumped, i.e. site modifiers jp, the user can split out modifiers to j p. To do this, highlight the column BUT VERY IMPORTANT, do not highlight the column header, (i.e. Site_M1) as the macro will split that word out, it gets messy, just put the cursor at the top of the data and highlight to the bottom of the data and hit "ctrl s". This will take each individual character and put it into the next column. This is a helpful function for other attributes commonly clumped together, such as Surface Expression and Terrain Texture etc.
If the data for Disturbance Class is clumped, the use can split the codes into two single characters then a double character, i.e. Fiwn needs to be F i wn. Once the data in the column is highlighted, IMPORTANT, just highlight the data, not the column heading,
use the macro "ctrl t" and this split it out accordingly.
To speed up the validation process or to make viewing the data easier, the user can delete all columns that do not contain data (except mandatory columns). Once the data in the column is highlighted, IMPORTANT, just highlight the data, not the column heading,
use the macro "ctrl d". It is strongly suggested that this macro be used after all of the data has been entered and validated, as data is often entered into the wrong column and the column must be re-inserted with proper header names.
To change the case of codes, i.e. a to A or B to b, use the macros "ctrl u" to change case from lower to upper and "ctrl l" to change case from upper to lower.
