(Major Russian realist novelist; b. Moscow, grad as military engineer, but worked as journalist and novelist; pro Russian nationalist and revolutionary, sentenced to death, pardoned and sent to camp in Omsk, 1850-54; compulsive gambler, money trouble; travelled in Europe, daughter died, suffered from epilepsy; concerned with decadence of values and psychological quandaries, d.
